In the morning, the snow was seven inches deep and the truck arranged to transport the machines was late to arrive. Ken was wrapping an apparatus in a bolt of cloth to protect it when Baldwin entered the workshop carrying a box in his arms.

“What have you there?” Ken asked as he tied the last knot.

“See for yourself.” Baldwin placed it on the workbench.

Ken dusted his hands and broke the box open. Inside was a gleaming new flywheel assembly fitted with an old style single stack magneto coil ring. He ship-whistled high to low in approval.

“It arrived on Wednesday,” Baldwin said. “I did not want to tell you until the work was done.”

Ken laughed. “I don’t blame you. You did the right thing. I guess the tradesman was being very conservative in his estimate. This was the shortest two weeks of my life.”

Baldwin smiled. “Does this mean you will be leaving now?”

“Hell no,” Ken said. Baldwin frowned. “Excuse me,” Ken said. “Heck no. I want to see this thing through. I want to meet Tesla. And I want our devices to help those poor women.”

“This makes me glad,” Baldwin said. They both heard the cargo truck struggling into the drive through deepening drifts of snow.
